10 Reasons to Celebrate Your College Graduation

My college graduation is less than a week away, and I’m in high spirits just thinking about it. I believe it’s important for every student to take a little time to reflect on what makes commencement such a magical time. After some creative brainstorming, I’ve come up with the top ten reasons to enjoy the moment for all it’s worth.

1. The work is done.

All of that seemingly endless reading, taking tests and studying for quizzes is over! You’ve finished what was asked of you, and it’s very likely that now you’ll have more time to spend with friends, family, and loved ones. Not to mention, you will never have to hear Mrs. Crimmons call on you, again.

2. You’re being acknowledged.

There’s nothing like the moment of hearing your name called over the speakers to a packed auditorium, the feeling of walking across the stage and being greeted by a handshake and a new snazzy diploma case. It’s acknowledgment, and it feels so good! You can now refer to yourself as a college graduate from the lucky school you attended.

3. Your friends and family will be happy for you.

Provided you have a support system made up of friends and family, then you can count on making them especially proud with your big accomplishment. A college graduation is exciting, and even if Aunt Molly and Uncle Herb haven’t experienced it for themselves, the people closest to you can usually tell how much hard work and effort was put into arriving at this day. Enjoy these funny graduation quotes.

4. You will be presented with a diploma.

Not only do you get to celebrate, but you get to walk away with a huge prize. You can display your new favorite piece of paper in your office, over your bed, at the kitchen table, or next to you while you sleep. A diploma is a big deal. Just picture it now: your name in gorgeous calligraphy under the bold heading of your school’s name. I recommend getting a gorgeous frame for your diploma, and showing it off.

5. Your resume will have some weight.

If you’ve already updated your resume, you know what I’m talking about. The feeling of adding the degree you’ve earned from a university adds instant sparkle to any academic or professional document.

6. You will belong to a community of alumni.

One of the best parts of college is having a sense of belonging. As a graduate, you are able to attend special events, join exclusive networking groups, and read university literature created just for you. Think of it as special V.I.P status, and you’ve earned it.

7. Your name will be heard by many.

I have to revisit the moment during commencement when the room is quieting from a round of applause, the person speaking into the microphone is getting ready to call the next student, and the previous graduate is making his or her way off the stage. The first thing you hear is that familiar sound of your name vibrating across the room; it’s so loud and powerful. The moment is yours; celebrate it; live it. That sliver of time will be remembered by you forever, and it will be followed closely by cheers and loud clapping.

8. It’s a BIG achievement.

If you haven’t gathered this information by now, let me just reaffirm the size of this accomplishment. You’ve done four years worth of work, you’re being acknowledged and honored by your school, friends, and family, and your name is going to be called to a crowd of celebrating people. College graduation is the icing on the cake. You’ve now got a degree backing you up, and the real world is ready to welcome you with open arms.

9. You’re one step closer to your dream job.

With academia out of the way, you can pursue work in the field of your choice, and you don’t have to worry about balancing a hectic school schedule with work. If you want to take on an intense internship, then by all means, go for it. You can even jump right in and nab a full-time gig in your area of expertise. The possibilities are endless.

10. Every day is a celebration.

I’m going to sound a little New-Agey right now, but I don’t care. You should appreciate every day as a reason to smile big, stand tall, and enjoy being you. College graduation is just one of those days that forces you to do what you should be doing all the time. As cliché as it sounds, this is the first day of the rest of your life; make each day worth living. Find out how to use positive thinking to get what you want.

With that, I leave you graduates. You are ready to be sent into the world to work in your expert field. You have proven yourselves; you are capable; and you are all going to make great successes. Now, go have some of that cake with the cap and gown on it.
