3 Writing Exercises for a Better Future

The goal is to create a future that makes you happy. With a little motivation, you can become both student and teacher.

As a blogger, I know the benefits creative writing exercises can have for strengthening business, personal development, and organizational skills. For many people, some of the best ideas come when they’re sitting down letting the words flow in free writing exercises. Keep in mind that you don’t have to be a professional writer to benefit from these assignments. Anyone can learn from opening up on the page, so get your pens and pencils ready!

Here are three writing exercises to help guide your future:

1. Write down the names of five of your idols.

  • Sit in a comfortable chair, take a deep breath, and think of five people who have impressed you in a personal or career related way. Write down each of their names across the top of a piece of paper. Take a few minutes to go over why you chose them.

It’s normal to admire other people when they embody certain qualities and strengths you’d like to have. Most likely, these people are in your top five because you would like to aspire to be like them in some way.

  • Under each of their names, jot down as many good qualities and strengths they have. When you’re finished, cross off the qualities you feel you already have. Circle the ones that are left over. Read material about how to improve these skills. Make it a future goal to embody them yourself.

2. Customize your dream career.

If you have a professional resume, pull it up on the computer or bring a hard-copy to your desk. This exercise is going to require that you refer back to your professional skills, so keep your resume on hand to make it much easier.

  • On a piece of paper, create a numbered list of five to ten of your strongest professional skills. These can be personal qualities, like “great communicator”, or they can be business related, like “good with numbers.” If you can write more, go for it! This is no time to be shy.
  • In another column, list the same number of hobbies you have. Do you like reading, writing, singing, planting, doing research, taking care of others, or something completely different? These are all great answers to column number two. Write down as many as you can, but try to get at least five to ten to match the number in column one.
  • Next, in a third column write an equal amount of topics that interest you. Is math your favorite subject? Do you love learning about food? Maybe Italian culture or Japanese art fascinate you to no end. Keep the list long for more variety.
  • Finally, mix and match one item from each column to customize a position that marries skill with interest and subject. The longer your columns, the more variety of choices you have.

3. Take a test or quiz.

There are so many online personality tests and career quizzes that you could keep yourself busy all day. Identifying your personal power areas is great for brainstorming about how to advance your career or whether or not to change direction.

You can find all kinds of quizzes online, or you can bring a notebook to your local library or bookstore and check the shelves for these self-development tools. Both of these places are great because you can look through hundreds of books in one day, take notes, and spend nothing but quality time.

  • Write down any passages that particularly stand out to you. Take knowledge from the sources you can access, and apply it to self betterment. The goal is to create a future that makes you happy. With a little motivation, you can become both student and teacher.
