Taking into consideration the fact that social networking is key to building a successful career, you may feel justified in socializing your heart out all over the Internet. Although reaching out to grow and maintain your network is important, observing and listening are equally important communication skills for social networking. Listening allows you to stay informed, pick up new ideas and follow the trends, so you can capitalize on them.

  1. Twitter Conversations
  2. Twitter brought together a bunch of big names to promote how its platform can be used to figure out what you want to know. I love how the clip ends with social media personality, Gary Vee, saying: “Really, I use Twitter to listen.”

    Take advantage of Twitter lists to organize your contacts based on interests and conduct searches on these topics. You can use Twitter client software, such as HootSuite or TweetDeck, to organize your lists and searches, so you can get a glimpse of the happenings all at once. Don’t forget to follow industry experts — you can learn tons not only from observing what they say, but also how they say it and what they do.

Start by setting up Google Alerts for your name and Twitter ID. This way, you can keep your personal brand in check by stay on top of conversations about you. Don’t forget to thank people for mentions and clear things up if there are criticisms. You should also create alerts for your topics of interest, so you can be the first to comment on, share or write about the breaking news in your field.

    Great social media info. I’m still not convinced that computer marketing trumps traditional methods, but for those not satisfied with or prepared to go with the traditional route, the info that you provided is invaluable
