CEOCareer Overview

Chief executive officers (CEO’s) are often also referred to as chief operating officers, general manager, president, vice president, county administrator, or even mayor in government sector positions. They are responsible for the strategies and policies that help a company or organization to be successful. They are responsible for all the policies and the management of the overall operations of businesses and corporations, public-sector organizations, nonprofit institutions, and other organizations. These positions require long hours and can require extensive travel. Competition is fierce for these high end position at the top.

Education Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration
Master’s Degree in Business Administration

CEO’s and other top executives often have bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in business administration and management fields or a liberal arts field. They may also have specialized degrees applicable to the industry that they work for in fields like medical services administration or computer information systems or software development. Many CEO’s and top executives are often promoted from within the ranks of lower management in large companies.

Licenses & Credentials

The Institute of Certified Professional Managers offers a Certified Manager (CM) credential. This certification is earned by completing training and passing a test. The credential is available to individuals at all levels of experience and seeking to enter management careers up to those who are already at the executive level. The certification is not mandatory for promotion in management but can give applicants an extra boost when compared to others without the credential.
