ESL teachers are also known as ESOL teachers, English as a second language teachers or English language learners teachers. ESL teachers are responsible to assist people learning how to speak, read, and write in English. For those wanting to work in public schools with children in grades K-12, a state teaching license and ESL endorsement are required by most states. Most ESL teachers work with adults to assist them with conversational skills, reading and writing. They may also train adults in job related communication skills. Most ESL teachers work part-time.

Education Requirements

Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree

For those working in colleges and universities, a master’s degree or graduate degree in adult education or ESOL is often required. Those with experience or degrees in other languages can also assist in communicating with students in their native language as they teach them English.
