Career Overview

Psychiatric aides are also called mental health assistants or psychiatric nursing assistants. Psychiatric aides are responsible to care for the mentally ill who cannot always care for themselves. They usually work with a team of psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, and therapists to ensure that mentally ill patients receive the correct care, therapies, and medication. Psychiatric aides are responsible to help patients with basic grooming, bathing, and dressing activities. They may also escort patients to events and lead them in education activities and games. They come in very close contact with patients and have large impact on their overall physical and emotional health and outlook.

Education Requirements

High School Diploma

Most psychiatric aides need a high school diploma and to have completed a diploma or certificate program in a nursing aid program or psychiatric nursing aid program offered through local vocation training schools and community colleges.
