She Applies, She Succeeds! Make the Most of Post-Grad Life With the Help of a Life Coach

Lori Dalton

Post-grad life should be exciting, rewarding, challenging and interesting. Unfortunately, for many people, post-grad life is quite the opposite: scary, confusing, difficult and a killer for your self-esteem.

I spoke with Lori Dalton, a certified Life Coach in the Toronto area, about how life coaching can be a great tool for beating the blues often associated with post-grad life.

Life Coaching 101

Someone new to the idea of life coaching “may feel a coach will pound them for everything they are doing wrong or that they will be talked at or made to feel guilty; that is not what coaching is. Coaching is to help you to discover what it is you want,” Lori explains.

Through a series of questions, a life coach will get you talking about what you want. From getting a new car, to meeting new people to landing your dream job, a life coach can help you make the most out of both your personal and professional life.

“We often start with goal setting because if people don’t know where they want to go, how can they get there?”

Career Chatter

From job searching to career counseling to networking assistance, a life coach can help you in all aspects of your post-grad career development.

According to Lori, a life coach can help answer questions like, “Why are you stuck? Why aren’t you getting a job? You may have difficulties with not knowing how to network. If a grad does have a job they might find they’re not a right fit, they’ve got the wrong job, they struggle with understanding the post-grad world; they may move to a new city and experience lots of new things all at once. Whether you have a job or don t have a job a life coach can certainly help you plan for the future.”

Dream Big

For many post-grads, landing that dream job can seem so far-fetched that they don’t even try, instead settling for the first job they could get.

From her experience Lori believes that, “sometimes fear is what is stopping you. You want to be in control, not controlled, a coach can help you get over those fears. People have dreams and they don’t know how to go about getting those dreams, some people don’t dream because setbacks happen in life and it stops them from dreaming.”

A life coach will help you co-design a way for you to take the steps necessary to achieve your dreams and goals. Nothing is too big or too small.

Money Matters

I’ll always remember when a career counselor told me that students are more likely to spend more time researching their next cell phone purchase. It is sad but true.

Life coaching isn’t very expensive, but it isn’t very cheap. Neither was your iPhone or Blackberry. A great life coach can give you the tools to make the most out of not only your post-grad experience, but the rest of your life. It just might be the best money you will ever spend.
