Software Engineer Career Field

Software engineers are responsible for engineering the software that allows computer to communicate and function. Software engineers must have excellent knowledge of computer systems and the actual computer code that underlies computer software programs and allows them to run. Software engineers are often involved in the design of entire new computer software systems made specifically for companies and organizations.

Educational Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree (4 years of College) in Computer Programming or Computer Science
Master’s Degree (2 years beyond bachelor’s degree) in Computer Science or Computer Engineering

Most companies will only hire software engineers with at least a bachelor’s degree in a computer technology based field like computer science or computer engineering. However, some software engineers can get hired with a different college degree or college certification if they can demonstrate the software engineering skills that are required to work in the software design industry. Project management positions generally require a master’s degree in computer science when software engineers want to work in management for large companies.
