Summer Fun on a Student Budget

As I write this post, the sun is shining outside and countless college students are in search of fun things to do without breaking the bank. I’ve come up with a long list of activities to do to stay busy during the summer. There’s a little something for everyone here. Whether you’re a current college student, a recent grad, a mommy, or someone who is in-between jobs, these tips will keep your summer feeling exciting, fresh, and eventful. Enjoy!

Before spending any money, calculate your budget.

Your happy balloon will most likely burst if you overspend, and no one likes to have to harass mommy and daddy for a few extra bucks.

1. Cultivate Crafts.

Summer is a great time to work on any kinds of crafts. From scrapbooking to sculpting, the warmer weather primes us for fun activities that stimulate our senses.

2. Get paid to have fun.

Find a fun job, so you can make money while doing something you enjoy. If you love to swim, then try to find local lifeguarding positions.

3. Cook or create cocktails.

Simple recipes are great for people on a budget. Grab a few of your friends and buy a bag of bagels, some cheese, and a jar of sauce for pizza bites. If everyone pitches in, it’s so worth it!

4. Find fashion bargains.

I love shopping the aisles of my favorite stores in search of a good sale. Make a day of bargain buying with your buddies. Look for stores that are closing or sections with last season’s merchandise. Cha-ching!

5. Go on a date.

Not all romantic rendezvous have to include an expensive dinner and costly drinks. Spend time picnicking in the park, sit by the sea, or chat it up with a cup of Joe. Peruse your local bookstore and show off your intellect.

6. Throw a party.

Everyone loves a party! As long as you have friends, you can celebrate something. Watch free movies online, paint your nails, rock out to the radio, or play a board game. It’s the simple things that can be the most fun.

7. Change your hair.

I am going to give you a little beauty industry insider’s info. Cosmetology schools often offer services at a discounted fee. So, if you’re interested in a new haircut or color, inquire at the nearest school and enjoy a good steal! Note: You will be worked on by a student, so keep in mind that they’re still learning.

8. Enjoy nature.

Go for a walk. Take a hike. Ride a bike. Nature is one of those freebies life happily throws our way. Even if you sit outside with a good book, you can enjoy the world around you—you can even be transported into another world where, perhaps, you’re a rich queen or king.

9. Take a free class.

Whatever your interests are, you can find free information on that subject. Since I love writing, I always look for free courses at Gotham. If your interest is highly specialized, hop on Google and learn something you never knew.

10. Get creative.

Spend the day singing in the subway, dancing in the rain, painting on the parkway—ugh, scratch that last one. You know what I mean. If you love drawing, grab some paper and pencils and let your mind take you somewhere fun. The summer is perfect for letting loose and being limitless.

The most important thing to remember is to not get too carried away by worrying about money. There are plenty of ways to save money in college. Instead, focus on the simple things in life, and enjoy the free fun waiting right outside your door. Grab yourself or a friend, and go!

I love visiting my sister and sitting on her
patio. We sip cool drinks, mostly bottled water and enjoy chatting about everything that is going on in our lives. It is lots of fun with a great deal of laughter.

I love to go camping with family and friends. Fresh air and nature, fishing, walking, sitting by the campfire. I also love sitting at the beach to look at the water and the sky, so much beauty we have right outside our door.
