Telecommunications Equipment RepairerTelecommunications equipment repairers work in switching hubs or central offices (inside) where they repair switches and routers, along with cables and other telecommunications equipment. In the central offices or hub areas, most telephone lines are fiber optic. Telecommunications equipment repairs must be skilled in how to fix these very complicated pieces of telecommunications equipment.  Telecommunications repairers can diagnose problems with switches and routers from remote locations, as newer switches and routers have self-monitoring systems, and the equipment continues to get more reliable.

Educational Requirements & Licensing Requirements

Associate’s Degree in Electronics or Communications Technology (2 years)
Bachelor’s Degree in Electronic or Communications Technology (4 years)

These days’ employers like to telecommunications equipment repairers that have a 2 year, associate’s degree or a 4 year bachelor’s degree in an electronics or a telecommunications technology field. Trade schools, community colleges, and traditional universities all offer programs in these areas. Some job applicants will obtain their training while in the military.
