The textbooks publishing industry is now beginning to publish textbooks and other technical manuals in electronic formats including on CD, on Internet websites, and for E-Readers. The publishing of textbooks and other technical manuals accounts for more than half of all publishing revenues. Publishers need excellent communication, management, and computer skills. They must often make very important decisions regarding how and when to publish different materials.

Educational Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree (4 years of College) in English, journalism, or technical writing

Textbook publishers often work their way into a publishing position from within existing companies. They may start out as an editor or writer and then become a publisher from there. A bachelor’s degree in fields likes English or technical writing is almost mandatory to get a publisher’s job. Competition is very keen for these positions. Applicants for publishing jobs with advanced degrees like an MBA or a master’s degree in English may find it easier to get hired.
